Disney’s Pixar showcased a new, animated short film at the beginning of Finding Dory in theatres this summer. It has now been released to the public for all to see for free!

The Alan Barillaro directed animated short is called ‘Piper’. It tells a heartwarming story of a adorable baby sandpiper, tackling the terror and triumph of growing up. It illustrates the tough choices parents have to make to teach their children to take care of themselves, learn to be independent, and survive on their own in this unforgiving world. No matter how accomplished you are at some things, there are always challenges ahead, and with that usually comes a sense of satisfaction from learning a new skill or facing a new fear.

It took Alan Barillaro and his team three years to make this six minutes of screen time, and the attention to craftsmanship and storytelling is worth it. The colour palette, and quality of graphics (in HD) are incredibly beautiful. It’s amazing how far computer animation has come, with creating such hyper realistic graphics. Pixar has the incredible tendency to capture every subtle detail, movement, lighting and colour technique to create a magical world with captivating characters. Just look at the detail put into the animated sand, water, sea foam, bubbles and feathers to make them seem more real than real life. The story telling is also impeccable; without saying one word, this film takes you on an emotional journey. Great job Pixar!
